Winter: opening windows for ventilation is a technical task
In severe cold winter, the temperature keeps dropping, the air is dry, the reproduction and transmission of microorganisms are accelerated, people spend more time indoors, the number and time of opening windows for ventilation and ventilation are reduced, the indoor air is highly polluted, and the resistance of the respiratory system is reduced. It is easy to cause respiratory diseases.
Opening windows for ventilation is a disease prevention method known to many people, and many health guidelines also advocate opening windows for ventilation every day. However, it is also important to open windows for ventilation in winter, otherwise it will be counterproductive.

- No matter how cold it is, open the windows properly.
In the cold winter, people will go out less and spend more time indoors. If the ventilation is poor, the carbon dioxide exhaled by the human body will accumulate in the room, which will affect human health. Therefore, no matter how cold the weather is, windows should be opened regularly for ventilation in winter to maintain air circulation and reduce the occurrence of diseases.
- Two pollution peaks should be avoided.
Many people are used to opening the windows before leaving home for work in the morning and after returning home at night, which is actually not good. According to research and testing, there are two peaks of air pollution in cities every day, usually around sunrise and evening (due to the drop in temperature, the polluted air settles), so this is the most inappropriate time to open windows. The window opening time is preferably from 9:00 am to 11:00 am or from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Because the temperature has risen during these two periods, the harmful gases deposited in the bottom of the atmosphere have dissipated, and the effect of opening windows for ventilation is better. If you encounter windy and sandy weather, it is best to open the window smaller if there is a screen window. And use a humidifier, humidification spray, or put a basin of water on the radiator to increase the humidity of the indoor air, so that dust and microorganisms can settle on the ground, reducing human breathing and inhalation.
- The number and time of window opening are particular.
The time and frequency of window opening in a day need to be arranged according to the size of the house, population size, living habits, indoor pollution level, weather conditions, and indoor and outdoor temperature difference.
Although it is cold in winter, the windows should not be opened less than twice a day for ventilation, and each time should not be less than 15 minutes. Taking an indoor space of 100 square meters as an example, if there is no wind and the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor is 20 degrees Celsius, the air exchange can be achieved in about ten minutes; if the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor is small, the exchange time will be extended accordingly. Another example is an 80-square-meter room. In the case of no wind and a temperature difference between indoor and outdoor of 20 degrees Celsius, it takes 9 minutes to ventilate completely; if the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor is 15 degrees Celsius, it takes 11 minutes to open the window for ventilation; Accurate grasp, it is enough to open the window for ventilation for 30 minutes.
However, the windows should also be opened flexibly according to the weather conditions. For example, when the air is relatively fresh after rain and snow, the window opening time can be increased appropriately; pollutants are easily emitted when the wind blows. More windows can be opened appropriately. However, it is difficult to dissipate pollutants on cloudy days, and even photochemical smog (a harmful light blue smog) will occur, so it is not appropriate to open windows at this time. Some people think that the more windows are opened, the better, but this is not the case, because frequent window openings will lower the room temperature, and the elderly and children with low resistance are prone to illness.
- The kitchen window needs to be opened more frequently.
Now almost every house uses range hoods, but some friends only use range hoods and open windows when cooking, but do not use range hoods or open windows when boiling water and stewing soup. In fact, even if you just boil water, if you don’t use a range hood and don’t open the windows, the gas exhaust gas can easily gather in the kitchen and spread to the living room and bedroom. The exhaust gas in the gas is harmful to the human body, and may even cause poisoning in severe cases. Therefore, when using gas, open the window or use a range hood no matter what you are cooking. However, doors and windows should be sealed tightly at ordinary times. If the seal is not tight, haze will enter in hazy days, sand will enter in dusty days, and water will enter in rainy days, all of which will affect the indoor air quality.
- Open windows for ventilation and don't forget to keep warm.
It should be noted that the indoor temperature should not drop below 16 degrees Celsius due to opening the window, and it is best to control it at 16~24 degrees Celsius. It is best for the elderly and children to add some clothes before opening the window, so as not to get sick due to the sudden drop in temperature after opening the window. If there are seriously ill patients, it is necessary to open the window carefully, and try to use ultraviolet disinfection lamps to purify the air.
Every time the air equivalent to the volume of the entire room is changed during ventilation, it is called an air change. One air change can remove about 60% of the original microorganisms in the air, and five air changes can remove about 99%. Generally speaking, it is enough to open the window 2-3 times a day, 30 minutes each time.
