Zhengzhou Depression: Is Insomnia Depression?
If you are depressed, you may not be able to sleep, but not being able to sleep is not necessarily depression.
Depressed patients in the somatic symptom group will show certain sleep disorders during the onset of the disease, such as difficulty falling asleep, even if they fall asleep, the sleep is relatively shallow, it is easy to dream, and it is difficult to fall back asleep once they wake up. Especially often wake up early and can't fall back to sleep after waking up, which is often a typical manifestation of sleep disorders in patients with depression. But insomnia is not necessarily depression, because there are many reasons for insomnia, and it is necessary to "take the right seat".
- Excessive mental stress, excessive stress, etc., resulting in stress-induced insomnia, such as excessive mental stress during the day, excessive stress, or excessive excitement, excitement, and excessive attention to or fear of something for some reason, etc. It will cause the sympathetic nerves of the cerebral cortex to be in a state of excitement all the time, which leads to stress-induced insomnia, and can't sleep. This condition usually resolves on its own and generally does not require treatment.
- Anxiety, depression, organic diseases, etc., lead to sleep disorders such as anxiety and depression. When there is bad mental stimulation, it will cause the dysfunction of the cerebral cortex and the imbalance of adult brain cell metabolism. There will also be insomnia. What's more, if there is an organic disease in the body, such as severe heart and lung disease or tumor, etc., causing obvious general discomfort, it can also cause sleeplessness.
- The sleeping environment is uncomfortable, which can lead to insomnia. For example, the bedroom is noisy, or it is not suitable for a new environment, etc., it may also lead to insomnia. So, there are many reasons for falling asleep, and depression is just one of them. Whether it is depression or not depends on the criteria for determining depression.
The core symptoms of depression are not in sleep, but in mood or emotion. There are two main symptoms of depression, one is a persistent low mood, and the other is a persistent decline in interest. If there is one of them, you should consider the possibility of depression, especially if the symptoms persist for more than two weeks and cannot be relieved, you must pay attention.
In clinical practice, it is generally believed that in addition to the above two core symptoms, there should be at least two additional symptoms (decreased attention, self-evaluation and self-confidence, self-guilt and sense of worthlessness, pessimism, suicidal or self-injurious behavior, sleep disturbance, loss of appetite, etc.), may be judged as depression. Obviously, sleep disturbance is just an additional symptom of depression, not to mention that some patients with depression may also have better sleep. So, insomnia is not necessarily depression. If you can't sleep for a long time, it will affect your normal work and life. - Be sure to seek medical attention in time and seek professional medical help. If necessary, the possibility of qualitative lesions should also be excluded.
