A Case of Psychological Counseling of Saliva Compulsion
- Basic information of help-seekers
Wu Jun (pseudonym), male, 23 years old, has graduated from university for more than a year. He has suffered from obsessive-compulsive saliva since the first year of high school. He studied well in junior high school. Because of the interference of saliva obsessive-compulsive disorder, I was unable to study hard, and my learning efficiency was extremely low. After taking medicine for nearly a year, my mental symptoms did not change, and I stopped taking medicine. In the third year of high school, my grades had dropped a lot. The results of the college entrance examination were not ideal, and I only got into a college. During college, because the environment is relatively relaxed, the symptoms have been alleviated. As graduation approached, the psychological pressure increased and the symptoms became more serious. Although I found a job after graduating from university, I persisted for half a year and couldn't continue, so I had to resign and went to the hospital to see a psychology department. I took medicine for more than half a year, but the problem didn't solve. I came here for psychological counseling and adjustment, and asked for help. Patient reported the following symptoms:
Always uncontrollable swallowing saliva, throat discomfort when swallowing. The more I control my saliva, the more I drool, the more uncomfortable I feel, but I can't control it.
Feeling that swallowing saliva will bring adverse effects to others. When you swallow your saliva, if you are close to others, others will be affected by you, and you will feel that others look uncomfortable;
Seriously affect interpersonal communication, always pay attention to oral cavity, cannot communicate with others, dare not go to crowded places, especially by car. always be alone;
Frequent insomnia, can fall asleep in my own home, but will definitely suffer from insomnia in unfamiliar places. I often suffered from insomnia when I was in college, and the insomnia was not relieved until I got to know my classmates well. After graduating from college, I lived in a dormitory, and the insomnia became serious again.
The help-seeker has been going on for more than seven years since the first year of high school. During this period, he went to the hospital for drug treatment twice. When he was in the third year of high school, he took the medicine prescribed by the hospital for nearly a year, but the symptoms did not change. , and then stopped taking medicine. After graduating from university, I took drugs for more than half a year, and had never done psychological counseling and adjustment before.
- The family situation and personal growth history of the help-seeker
The helper has a family of three. There are father, mother and Junjun as the only child in the family. His parents love him very much. Junjun lived up to his parents’ expectations. As soon as psychological problems occurred, his academic performance had always been among the best in the school. Later, because of psychological problems, Junjun's academic performance dropped a lot, which led to the failure of the college entrance examination. Although the family is not rich, their parents always put their energy on Junjun and give Junjun the best. Junjun feels that the ones he is most sorry for now are his parents.
- Analysis of the causes of psychological problems
Junjun, as the only child in the family, did not become arrogant because of the doting of his parents. On the contrary, he always wanted to be a good child. For this reason, he has been studying hard and wants to repay his parents. The courses in primary and junior high schools are relatively simple, and Junjun can learn them easily. The difficulty of studying in high school is increasing, and the learning tasks are too heavy. Junjun will have some problems in his studies. Generally, high school students will encounter these problems, but when he encounters problems, he always thinks that it is his fault, that he is not good enough or he has done something wrong. The wrong attribution made him feel that he was no longer a good child in the eyes of his parents, his self-confidence was hit, and his heart became more fragile. When she encountered setbacks again, she thought it was her own problem, and thus fell into a vicious circle. In this bad behavior circle, Junjun couldn't extricate himself. She couldn't see outside the circle and only saw herself, so he paid more attention to herself and was extra sensitive. When she was anxious or restless, it showed through physical discomfort. An occasional focus on one's own saliva causes symptoms to fixate on swallowing saliva. After a long time, because the problem has not been solved in time, the symptoms have generalized to other aspects of life.
The process of psychological counseling
When Teacher Meiling gave Junjun the first psychological consultation, it was difficult for Junjun to focus on solving the problem. Her attention was always on herself, and she was always swallowing and compulsively.
During the fifth counseling session, Junjun showed significant improvement. During the counseling process, she hardly swallowed, and even thought of going out. Whether it's a game of going out to find autographs from strangers or playing a game of pushing people with a counselor assistant, she is very good. She even offered to sing a song to the other clients at the end of the session.
After the sixth psychological consultation, Junjun proposed that he wanted to find a job. His parents had supported him for so many years, and he felt very guilty towards them. Teacher Meiling supported his idea and said that his problem would be completely solved by doing so.
In the later consolidation of psychological counseling, I witnessed Junjun's transformation. He no longer paid attention to his own saliva, nor did he pay attention to others' opinions of him. In his own words, the reason why he was troubled by the obsessive-compulsive disorder of saliva in the past was because his heart was too weak and his vision was too narrow. In terms of symptoms, I have not grown up. He said that it is different now, and now Teacher Meiling has helped me to open my eyes, and my heart has really become stronger.
- My psychological perception
(1) During this time of studying with Teacher Meiling, I have seen many real cases. I have seen clients recover after the teacher’s adjustment, and I have also seen many clients who have been adjusted by the teacher’s psychological counseling before. I came to visit Mr. Han and Mr. Dai, and let me feel that a psychological counselor is a great profession—a good psychological counselor can not only help a person get out of psychological troubles, but also help reshape a person's soul, so that No matter what he encounters on the road of future life development, he can face it calmly. At the same time, I am also more aware that in order to grow into an excellent psychological counselor, it is not enough to study psychology for four years in university and then obtain a certificate of psychological counselor. Three years, five years, but I am willing to work hard for it.
(2) In this case and many other cases I have seen through my teacher, I found that the reason for the serious psychological problems in the end is that they encountered troubles in their growth in the process of growing up (such as: gender problems, learning problems, personality problems, etc.) and have not been resolved in time, resulting in long-term accumulation. Our parents love their children too much and give them all the material care they can give, but at the same time they also give them layers of spiritual shackles. Only tell the children that this road cannot be followed, and that there are obstacles in that road. Some parents even pave a road for their children, thinking that the children will be less frustrated and hurt. But he forgot to teach children how to face setbacks, forgot to teach children how to choose and take responsibility for themselves, and became a glass boy. How can such children face this increasingly cruel society when they grow up?
