What does height mean to a man in China?

A while ago, the topic of "how obsessed boys are with 180" became popular on the Internet, and many netizens made fun of them:

At the same time, more and more girls began to think that " 180 is the best height for men" , and the standard of mate selection has been continuously improved. Height, without a doubt, has been regarded as one of the core competencies of masculinity . Therefore, both on the Internet and in life, short boys are invisible.

No one cared about what happened to them, no one cared about what they were thinking, and the word "short" became their biggest anxiety .

1. The sadness of short boys

01-"Short, ruined my youth"

My name is Dai Ming (pseudonym), I am 27 years old this year, and my height is 165cm. My parents are not tall, so I take it for granted that my genetics determines my height. Still, my height is the tallest in the house, which is kind of ridiculous .

When I was young, I was bullied by my classmates because I was short . In junior high school, because of my height, I encountered more serious school violence . Some classmates deliberately hung my schoolbag out of my reach, stood by and watched me, laughing at me; when I squatted down, classmates would step over my back with one foot, saying that it would make me last forever Not high; all kinds of ugly nicknames are countless...

When I was a teenager, I couldn't reconcile with my height. I blamed my height for all my misfortunes. I even wanted to have height augmentation surgery in the past to lengthen my legs . Fortunately, the remaining sanity made me choose to let go. I started to study hard and finally got 985, far away from those who bullied me.

After walking into the wider world, I realized that height cannot determine a person's height in life. But even so, the humiliation left by adolescence, I will never forget for the rest of my life.

02-"Physical examination, become my psychological shadow"

My name is Daluo, I am 25 years old and I live in the Northeast where there are tall people everywhere. I am only 168cm tall and I have always felt inferior. My surname is Luo, and I was nicknamed "Dwarf Carrot" when I was a child. I played basketball in gym class, and no one wanted to form a team with me. They all thought I was a hindrance.

Growing up, the thing I hated the most was getting medical exams . In high school, after the physical examination, the teacher would always read it out loud. Every time I felt ashamed, I wanted to hide quickly , for fear of being laughed at by others. Until now, I am in my 20s, and I still hide it when I go to the hospital for a physical examination, and I dare not let others see my height.

When people ask me "how tall", my vanity runs high, and I always say I have 171. After speaking, I regretted it, and felt that I should not lie, which was very contradictory.

Sometimes I can't help but ask myself: Is height really that important?

Second, the higher the height, the shorter the life span?

In fact, whether it is Dai Ming or Da Luo, their concern about height is a common pain point for many short boys. So, is there no benefit to being short? Perhaps the following statement can make short boys find a little comfort and pull back a game on the scale of life.

As early as 2014, a study conducted by American scientists found that short men lived longer than tall men of the same age . Among them, men with a height of no more than 157 cm lived the longest.

In addition to being related to longevity, studies have found that height is also closely related to the risk of cancer.

A 2021 study published in Cancer Defense, which looked at more than 5 million Swedish men and women , found that taller people had a higher risk of developing cancer .

In adults, the risk of developing melanoma increases by 30 percent for every 4-inch increase in height, the researchers noted . In addition, for every 4 inches of height, there is an 11% increase in the risk of cancer in men and a 20% increase in the risk of breast cancer in women.

Professor Edward of Harvard University believes that this conclusion may be related to the size of the organ and the number of cells . People with relatively high heights have larger organ volumes, more active organ cell proliferation, and greater possibility of mutation, which is more likely to cause cancer.

There is also a view that this is related to the higher level of growth factors in the body , and height development is related to various growth factors and hormones, such as growth hormone IGF-1, which can promote height development on the one hand, but also increase the incidence of cancer on the other hand. risk.

For ordinary people, height is a foregone conclusion after adulthood and cannot be changed at will. However, understanding the relationship between height and cancer can help you grasp the risk in advance and take targeted preventive measures.

3. How tall is normal for adults? weight?

So, what is affecting our height? In general, height is " destined for seven days, three points depend on hard work ", and height mainly depends on genetic inheritance. Therefore, scientists have come up with a formula that can predict height:

Male future height ( cm ) = (56.699+0.41×father’s height+0.265×mother’s height±3 cm )

Female future height ( cm ) = (40.089+0.306×father’s height+0.431×mother’s height±3 cm )

However, the above formula cannot be used as an absolutely ideal calculation result , because height also has a certain relationship with the day after tomorrow, such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, disease, etc. Therefore, in addition to the above formula, it is recommended to calculate with the "height development curve " .

Through continuous measurement of height in different periods, the growth rate of height can be calculated, and the acceleration or retardation can be judged . If the developmental curve has been developing along the first 6 grade lines , it is normal. If the developmental curve gradually flattens or even declines, it may be related to abnormal development. If the development has been along the last grade line (marked as 3), it is short stature, and you should also be vigilant.

In addition to height, weight is also a measure of a person's health. So, how much weight is normal? The answer is: meet the following three criteria at the same time.

Standard 1, BMI is normal

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height squared (m²), if BMI ≤ 18.4 is thin, between 18.5 and 23.9 is normal, between 24 and 27.9 is overweight, and ≥ 28 is obese .

Standard 2, the waist circumference is normal

Waist circumference, that is, the measurement of the thinnest part of the waist horizontally around a circle. In the Asia-Pacific region, men with a waist circumference > 90 cm and women with a large waist > 80 cm are considered obese .

Standard 3, the body fat rate is normal

Body fat rate ( %) = total body fat (kg) ÷ body weight (kg) . According to our country's standards, adult women with a body fat rate of > 30% and adult men with a body fat rate of > 25% are obese .

Height is not a measure of a person's fitness, nor does it determine whether a person is healthy or not. Instead of worrying about your height and complaining about yourself, it is better to take action to keep your body healthy and live out your own color. No matter male or female, we shouldn't use our height to demean others, it's not cute at all, are you right?
