Smoking is harmful to health, why do old smokers not suffer from lung cancer? This new study finds out
The harm of smoking, as we all know, smoking is the number one killer of human health!
The country promotes that smoking is harmful to health every day, but smokers are not falling but rising. The most important thing is to follow the trend. Meeting and handing over a cigarette has become a must for our intersection!
It is one of the reasons why there are more and more smokers when you go out for a social event without a pack of cigarettes. People know that there are tigers in the mountains, and they prefer to travel in the mountains! Sometimes it is a social phenomenon of helplessness!
What harm does smoking do to the body?
Smoking is very harmful to the body, and second-hand smoke is even more harmful. It is mainly an irritation to the respiratory tract and lungs, which is easy to cause allergies, even aggravate lung inflammation, or cause cancer.
Smoking will first cause damage to the lungs. Smoking will shorten the cilia of the bronchial epithelial cells, and will also make the cilia irregular, which will also hinder the movement of the cilia, reduce the local resistance, and easily make the lungs infected. .
Smoking also causes lung cancer. 90% of the overall mortality is caused by smoking. The initial lesions are not detected until the cancerous cells spread to the blood vessels and other organs.
Smoking can also cause emphysema, the accumulation of toxic substances in the bronchi of the lungs, which will prevent the body from inhaling normal air and exhaling normally, causing the cells in the lungs to swell or burst, making it difficult for the patient to breathe.
The smoke that comes out when smoking will affect others, which is equivalent to smoking second-hand smoke. The nicotine in tobacco can also constrict blood vessels, which can easily lead to sclerosis of renal arteries.
Smoking also produces carbon monoxide, nitrosamines, nitrogen oxides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzopyrene, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen oxides and other toxic substances, which can harm other family members.
This is also an important reason why many people in some families get cancer.
There are more than 300 million smokers in my country, and about 740 million non-smokers suffer from second-hand smoke. If the prevalence of smoking is not controlled, by 2050, the annual number of deaths will exceed 3 million.
According to WHO reports, 85%-90% of lung cancer deaths can be attributed to smoking, and nearly 6 million people worldwide die every year from smoking and secondhand smoke.
However, some people will find out why some old smokers have smoked for a lifetime, but still live well, there is no problem, and some people even live a long life.
Smoking is harmful to health, why do old smokers not suffer from lung cancer? This new study finds out
A paper published in Nature Genetics addresses this phenomenon:
Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine recruited two groups of non-cancer patients undergoing bronchoscopy.
One group consisted of 14 never-smokers between the ages of 11 and 86, and the other group consisted of 19 smokers between the ages of 44 and 81.
They smoked up to 116 pack-years (one pack-year equals one pack of cigarettes per day for one year), and the normal lung epithelial mutation profiles of the two groups of participants were compared by SCMDA.
Of all the lung cell types, lung epithelial cells are the most cancer-prone, and they can survive for years or even decades, so they can become mutated with age and smoking.
From a medical point of view, the key lies in the strength of the individual's immune system. The stronger the immune system, the stronger the ability to resist diseases, and the weaker the immune system, the easier the human body is to get sick.
People should not use this as an excuse and basis to justify their smoking behavior by thinking that "someone will never get lung cancer after smoking for a lifetime".
Healthy life and healthy breathing require healthy lungs. People breathe every moment. Adults breathe more than 28,000 times a day and night. It shows how hard the lungs are. Do you have the heart to hurt them again?
Healthy lungs are pink, while old smokers' lungs under the thoracic surgeon's scalpel are gray-black. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, there is no doubt about it!
Among lung cancer patients, 90% have a history of smoking, but smoking is not the only cause of lung cancer. There are at least other factors related to it: occupational carcinogens, air pollution, ionizing radiation, dietary factors, viral infections, mycotoxins, endocrine factors Disorders, family inheritance, etc., the occurrence of lung cancer is the result of the combined action of multiple factors.
