2. British 11-year study: eat less meat, less cancer
In February this year, BMC Medicine published an article entitled "Risk of cancer in regular and low meat-eaters, fish-eaters, and vegetarians: a prospective analysis of UK Biobank participants. and vegetarians : a prospective analysis of UK Biobank participants)" study by researchers at the University of Oxford, UK.
The results of the study showed that people who ate meat five times a week or less had a lower overall risk of cancer .
The study analyzed data from 472,377 participants, aged 40-70, who were free of cancer . Participants were divided into four groups based on the frequency of eating meat:
Regular meat eaters : eat meat more than five times a week;
Low-meat eaters : eat meat five or fewer times a week;
Fish eaters : eat only fish, no other meat;
Vegetarians : including vegans and vegans.
A total of 54,961 people were diagnosed with cancer during the study period. Compared with regular meat eaters, low-meat eaters had a 2% lower overall cancer risk , fish eaters 10%, and vegetarians 14% lower. The risk also decreased for certain cancers, such as:
Rectal cancer : 9% lower in low-meat eaters than regular meat eaters;
Prostate cancer : Fish eaters have a 20% lower risk than regular meat eaters .
However, the researchers admitted that this study is an observational study, and the collection of dietary data also has certain limitations, and it is difficult to accurately describe the causal relationship between diet and cancer.
3. Is the high incidence of cancer in China really related to eating meat?
Recently, the National Cancer Center released the " China's Latest Cancer Report ". The data shows that in 2016, there were 4.064 million new cancer cases and 2.4135 million new cancer deaths in China. On average , about 11,000 people suffered from cancer every day , which is equivalent to the population of medium and large villages. number.
While the number of cancer patients continues to rise, China's per capita meat consumption has doubled, which makes people wonder: Is the high incidence of cancer in China related to meat consumption?
Professor Lin Feng, director of major surgery at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University , said that from a medical point of view, there is no causal relationship between processed meat products or red meat and cancer, but excessive consumption may increase the risk of cancer and may induce cancer .
In terms of nutritional value, red meat is a good source of high-quality protein and is also rich in nutrients such as heme iron, zinc, selenium, phosphorus, vitamin B12, niacin, riboflavin, and thiamine. However, red meat is also higher in fat .
In general, the occurrence of cancer is related to factors such as congenital genes, increasing age, exposure to carcinogens, and cannot all be attributed to eating meat. But long-term excessive meat consumption is associated with an increased risk, so you need to learn how to eat meat in a healthy way.
